Paperworks’ Paper Finder is an Ecommerce Flop

Today I was shopping for paper products when I wound up on the Paperworks ecommerce site. At first glance, it seemed that the long list of categories in the left navigation would be a lot to sift through. When I noticed the “Try our Paper Finder!” icon in the upper left corner, I decided to give it a whirl. Sadly, this little tool is a pretty big flop in my book. Take a look.

In this ecommerce store’s Paper Finder, users will find drop-down menus to help them narrow down their product search. Options include Category, Size, Color, Weight and Brand. First, I opened the Category drop-down. I found even more categories here than there are in the left navigation menu, and many of them are redundant, or even include sizes. This is way too much for shoppers to scroll through! The Category menu needs to be cut down and simplified for sure.

Next I opened the Size drop-down. As I scrolled through, I was even more puzzled. I’m seeing many of the same sizes that were included in the category options… Why are these options listed in both menus? This will not help shoppers narrow down their search at all. It will only lead to confusion. Sizes need to be eliminated from the Category menu entirely, and only placed here.

As you can see, Paperworks’ Paper Finder is not a very helpful tool. Shoppers on this ecommerce store would probably be better off sifting through the left navigation menu after all! I recommend simplifying the menus, and eliminating redundancies, to make this tool easier to use.
