For an ecommerce site like Etsy.com, with an almost limitless assortment of products at the shopper’s fingertips, it can sometimes be incredibly overwhelming to find an item you want. I had seen something specific on Etsy a little while ago, and I decided to use the mobile site to look for it again. Fortunately, Etsy’s mobile ecommerce store provides some really helpful options for sorting and filtering through the vast quantities of items. For this, it earns the Ecommerce Outtakes Badge of Honor for the week. Check it out!
When I got to the home page, I saw some cool features. First of all, there is a link to download the Etsy app at the top. I opted to just stick with the mobile site, but the app might be a post for another day! Anyway, the main images on the home page here showcase some handpicked items. I like that the price is clearly displayed over the photo. Even though the name of the item isn’t here (which I understand, because many of the product names contain a lot of keywords to make them easier to search for), the pictures give a very good idea of what the item is.
When you scroll below these images, there are several categories to choose from for those shoppers looking to browse. Again, I like this because Etsy can be overwhelming, but it gives people a good place to start. I especially like the seasonal options, like Back to School, as well as the Trending Now category, which provides a cool social element to the shopping experience.
Now I was coming to this site to search for a specific item. I had seen a necklace with a pendant that looked just like tree bark, but I couldn’t remember the name of the store or the artist. So I entered “bark necklace” into the search function. This search returned a whopping 774 results… Yikes! Thankfully, there were a lot of options here to help me narrow it down.
I like the options at the top that allow you to select the type of product: Vintage, Handmade or Craft Supplies. This is a good first step to help shoppers drill down into the specific results they want. I selected Handmade, and then another drop-down appeared prompting me to choose a subcategory. I like this, but in my particular case, it wasn’t super helpful since most of the results are jewelry. Still, it’s progress!
Once I chose the Jewelry subcategory, I opened the Filter link to see what other options this ecommerce site had to offer. I was very happy with the results! I can select from several price ranges, including under $10, under $25, under $50 and under $100. The Sort By menu offers the option to choose from Relevancy, Most Recent, Highest Price and Lowest Price. Then I can choose to view only the items that ship to the country I want, or even select items that are made locally. These are all very helpful in helping shoppers to really find the right match.
Now, if I’m being honest, there are some elements of this mobile site that I don’t love. But I have to admit that the site search and the sorting and filtering options really are helpful in leading the user to the items they’re looking for. On a site like this, search and refinement are hugely important. So here’s your mobile Badge of Honor, Etsy. Hope you enjoy it!
