Ecommerce Snapshot: Moosejaw

I was shopping around on the Moosejaw website when I came across an odd filtering mistake I had actually never seen before–which is impressive considering how many filtering and refinement issues we come across on this blog! While browsing through the shoe selection, I wanted to narrow down my results by size. But take a look at the size filter:

One of the options, sizes 5-7.5, has to be the most unhelpful filter ever. That’s a range of 6 sizes, when you include half sizes. Come on, Moosejaw, you know that’s not how shoe shopping works! Please fix the shoe size refinement so that it’s actually helpful to the shopping experience.

Ouch. I don’t know why they did this, esp. if they’re already using multiple selection. It’s like they conceived these aggregate values when they were doing single-select facets, then ‘upgraded’ to multi-select facets. Actually, I’d guess that’s why it happened, but I can’t be sure.

But I’m not sure why they’d need to do this in the first place. Shoes.com does it great @ http://www.shoes.com/mens. I believe the best approach would be a non-hierarchical multi-select like they’re already using for color.
