ECommerce Snapshot: Buy Buy Baby

I was on the Buy Buy Baby website, and noticed an option right under their logo: Turn Menus Off.

“What does this do?” I thought to myself. So I clicked.

It looks like nothing has changed, so what exactly is the point of this option? What does it do?? Is Buy Buy Baby just trying to mess with me??? If so, it’s clearly working…

That link disables the mouse overs on the menus. UX nightmare. I’ve actually contacted them before about other major unrelated issues. One very serious non-UX issue they fixed — the reason I contacted them. The rest? Circular filem, including this one. I actually told them about _this_exact_issue_ years ago on bedbathandbeyond.com.

So you’ll find the same exact UX nightmare on bedbathandbeyond.com. They did this because people presumably got annoyed when they ran their mouse over the elements. But can’t they just do a hover-intent on the menus? Yep. See http://cherne.net/brian/resources/jquery.hoverIntent.html

hoverIntent is a plug-in that attempts to determine the user’s intent… like a crystal ball, only with mouse movement! It works like (and was derived from) jQuery’s built-in hover. However, instead of immediately calling the onMouseOver function, it waits until the user’s mouse slows down enough before making the call. Why? To delay or prevent the accidental firing of animations or ajax calls. Simple timeouts work for small areas, but if your target area is large it may execute regardless of intent.

Nice B&Ms. And their programmers may be fine. But this is what happens when you let programmers “drive” without guidance. They need to add some tech-savvy UX employees/consultants (like us?) to their eCommerce department before anything gets fixed. You won’t have difficulty finding more problems. This is just the tip of the iceberg =)
